3 Tips for Hitting Driver off the Deck

We have all seen the pro golfers do it:  Hitting a driver from the fairway and running on up to the green.

Is it that easy?  Not even close.  But the shot can be a good choice in a few instances.

Some may say that a 3 wood is always the better play.   Not so fast my friends.

3 woods today often launch high with low spin and sometimes they get up too quickly in you have tree trouble, like I always seem to have.  Also, the much smaller head on the 3 wood gives you much less margin for error.

Therefore, there are some times when a low running driver off the deck is the best play.  It may not even go as far as the fairway wood, but that is not the point here. Shot making and creativity can save you strokes.  Also, you do not need to swing 120 mph to do this. I have roughly a 105mph swing speed and have no problems. Remember it is NOT like a teed up driver swing.   I expect about 185- 215 carry with lots of roll depending on how dry it is and how much I fade the ball.  I have seen 90mph swing speeds do this too, so give it a try.

3 Tips for Hitting Driver from the Fairway

1. Ball position – Make sure you have the ball forward in your stance.  Not quite as much forward as when you tee it up, but quite a bit.  Similar to a fairway wood or long iron.

2. Steep angle of attack – You want to take the club away rather abruptly and swing down on the ball. Not a sweeping motion. With these large head drivers you need to get down and dirty and take a small divot.

3. Think wide take away and cutting across the ball –  You want to take the club back a little on the outside. This will allow you to slightly cut across the ball, imparting more loft on the shot. Also, this will help the ball move with a nice low little fade.

So if you have over hanging trees, have room to run the ball, and need to play a fade, a driver off the short stuff is the play for you.

Good luck.

Hi, my name is Johnny Giovonni. I am in the financial services industry and own my own business on the side. I work too much and golf too little. That is why I helped create this site, so I could at least have the dream of golfing everyday. Also, I am a huge numbers person and have researched many advanced gaming theories and other nerd stuff like the Rule of 72 and Benford's Law. When I am not working I am either golfing, watching sports, or researching statistics for my weekly and daily fantasy picks. I am under full belief there is an enormous advantage to be had with information when picking your lineups every week. I hope to bring that knowledge to this website. I look forward to writing and responding to your comments. Check out some of our course reviews, fantasy sports picks and as always, provide any feedback!
