Johnny G’s FanDuel NBA & DraftKings NBA Lineup Picks 1-16-19

Wednesday, January 16th brings us an eight-game NBA slate.  After putting up 142 points in a surprise (at least to me) blowout in Denver last night, the Warriors go home to get paced up against the Pelicans.  I’m pretty sure if it was left up to Boogie Cousins, this is the game he would make his debut in.  The Houston James Hardens have a home matchup against the Nets.  The way the Rockets’ season has played out, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if The Beard has a 100 fantasy point night sometime soon.  He will have to soon just to hit value as FanDuel moved him up to $14k(?!).

Let’s take an entirely too-early look at the building blocks for the January 16th main slate. More times than not, starting lineup announcements, breaking news, injuries, rest, etc. will affect the value of these plays and impact your roster construction. But, the sooner we can get a feel for the slate and the optimal build, the better.

Cash Plays

This seems like one of those slates that dictates the cash build for us to a degree.  We’ll have to pick the high-priced studs we want to roll with and then everyone will be digging for value.  With the top end of the pricing spectrum getting higher, there’s an element of star & scrubs that almost everyone will contend with.

Mo Harkless is questionable tonight, possibly missing his 5th straight game.  If he misses (and possibly even if he doesn’t), that will provide a good floor for an already consistent Evan Turner.  A great matchup against the Cavs had no ill effects on his pricing.  DraftKings was even nice enough to lower it by $100 to $4300 (he’s $4500 on FanDuel).  His minutes usually range in the mid-20s as he plays mostly with the 2nd unit, but he’s been known to stick around when the starters check back in.  His floor has been close to 5x for at least a week and he’ll help the big guns fit in your lineup.

The Clippers have been better lately defending the small forward position, but still rank in the bottom half of the league.  News came out that Rubio, Exum, and Neto will all miss at least another week.  That leaves Donovan Mitchell to continue running the point for the Jazz, but it should also leave Royce O’Neale in the starting lineup.  He’ll be one of the more popular value plays tonight, for good reason.  He dropped a dud in his last game vs. Detroit, not even attempting a field goal, so both DFS sites have given us a discount.  He’s $4500 on DraftKings and $4600 on FanDuel.  It’s a similar story as Turner, we’re not worried about the upside; we’re more interested in secure minutes and a safe floor.  Since O’Neale cracked the starting rotation, he’s averaging almost 35 minutes per game.

GPP Plays

The Mavs defense has been especially bad over the last couple of weeks.  Marco Belinelli and Rudy Gay both went through shootaround this morning, but both are listed on the injury report.  Gay is now probable and says he’s playing.  If there are no restrictions on him, he’s a good candidate to exceed value.  DraftKings has him listed at $5300, FanDuel at $5500, so the price is right.  He destroyed Dallas last time he faced them.  If he has a setback, I’ll be firing up Derrick White in GPPs.  The Mavs have given up the 3rd most fantasy points in the league to guards this month.
