Hawk’s Nest at Ohio State ATI
Location
Creston, OH. Right on Rt 3. Creston is a dot on the map. Let’s just say 15 minutes north of Wooster.
The Course
Hawk’s Nest is a nice test of golf for all levels of skill. It’s not very long and only 6400 yards from the white tees. For you gorillas out there that feel the need to drop bombs from the blues, it measures out at 6800. There is never a hole that you sit back and say, “wow, this is just a true piece of beauty and golf course architectural excellence,” but it is a nice setting, and there are no two holes that look the same.
The greens are the true challenge of Hawk’s Nest, as they are fast and plenty of undulation will greet you on many holes. The real trick at Hawk’s Nest is the approach to the greens. The speed and the undulation of the greens calls for an accurate approach. The fairways are not tough to hit, but the money is 50 yards and in.
The Pro Shop
For you Ohio State fans, you’ll think you died and went to The Horseshoe. The course has an affiliation with the OSU ATI Center in Wooster so the pro shop is full of enough OSU swag that Wayne Woodrow Hayes would be proud. Other than that, they sell over priced balls and cruddy clubs.
The Bar
I was impressed that they had a decent selection of beer for purchase at a decent price. I didn’t notice any hard stuff.
Beer Cart Girls
Sadly, the rolling awesomeness that is the beer cart was not out on the track the day I was out (in mid-April) and frankly, it was sad. My guess is they wait until the ladies get done with the Spring semester before they turn them loose.
Staff
Very courteous staff that seem happy to have you out at their facility.
Summary
I dig The Nest. It was in good shape for as early as in the year as it was. It was wet in spots, but where you would expect it to be in the spring (valleys and low-lying areas). They need to put some sack in their carts as going up every hill I felt like “The Little Engine that Could.” The smell of cow growler can very pungent in spots, but that just adds to the country experience of the place. It’s out of the way (an hour from Cleveland, and hour from Canton, and 40 minutes from Akron) but it is a very fun place to play and worth the petrol to get out and knock it around.
Bottom Line: 3 cold ones
