Welcome back! The 2016 calendar year is here and the PGA Tour is back in action this week at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. With less than 30 players in the field, it is an event with no cut, so keep that in mind when building your fantasy lineups. There will be a narrow salary range this week with a limited field and no cut, which makes picking high finishers extra important.
Looking to build on a 4 out of 6 50/50 contest record since the beginning of the wrap around season last fall, I am excited about the upcoming fantasy golf season. It seemed like a long month off!
As with last fall, I will post the initial thoughts on Sunday night, then post the DraftKings lineup either Monday or Tuesday once it is available.
Played in Hawaii, the Hyundai gets some of the best golfers in the world each and every year since the prior year’s winners are the only invitees. With that being said, not every player makes the trip, as I think Rose and McIlroy will not be playing this week. Double check before tee off though to make sure all of your players are still playing.
There will be tons of birdies this week, which leads me to like guys such as Dustin Johnson and other long hitters. However, even shorter players can do well here as Zach Johnson (despite an equipment change) and Danny Lee should both be heavily considered to be in your lineup. I am also a huge fan of Justin Thomas and Kevin Kisner, two of the best young guys on the Tour today. Obviously you cannot have them all in your lineup, but you can definitely get a few of them, depending on what their prices are. After the salaries are released, I will update the post with the actual lineup.
2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions DraftKings Lineup
Golfer | Salary | Comments - Stats | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Dustin Johnson | 10600 | DJ finished 6th in 2014 and won in 2013. With his length, I'm counting on some eagle bonuses and a high finish. |
2 | Zach Johnson | 9500 | 7th last year after winning in 2014. Yes, the equipment change to PXG bothers me but his wedge game likely won't be affected and a strong short game pays dividends at the Plantation Course. |
3 | Justin Thomas | 8700 | Should have been ROY last year with 7 top 10's. A win and another top 10 already this season. Kills the par 5's and finished 37th in Scrambling last season. |
4 | Danny Lee | 7500 | Lee isn't long, but his highest ranks on Tour come in Putting & Around the Green. The wind should be blowing hard, so up & down will be valuable this week. |
5 | Smylie Kaufman | 7000 | The wind not only stresses the short game, it also evens the field for the first-timers. Off since late Nov after a bit of a 1st win hangover, Smylie should be ready to go and get us value at a discount. |
6 | Troy Merritt | 6600 | Merritt is very much hit or miss, but he's another guy that gets better as he gets closer to the hole. If the wind pushes GIR % lower Merritt's value will increase. |

Good luck with your 2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions lineup!
