3 Jack Recap: Spieth & Fowler – Golf’s Marketing Dream Comes True

I thought the week before a major was supposed to be low-key?  That was a heavy dosage of good golf on both continents.

Spieth Wins John Deere Classic

  • Spieth bested Tom Gillis on the second playoff hole to win the JDC for the second time in three years.
  • After a lackluster 71 on Thursday, Jordan Spieth lit TPC Deere Run up with 64 Friday and 61 on Saturday.  Does anyone shake off the rust faster than Jordan Spieth?
  • He took a two-shot into the final round, but after a slow start to his Sunday, he found himself four strokes back with only six holes to play.  Three birdies on his back nine landed him in the playoff.
  • Spieth now has more FedEx Cup points (3,628) than anyone has ever finished with in an entire season.
  • Zach Johnson continues to own TPC Deere Run as he extended his streak to 28 consecutive rounds in the 60s on his way to a T3 finish.

So where does this leave the “Jordan should be preparing for St. Andrews instead of playing the John Deere” debate?  Does a win negate the arguable disadvantage of less preparation time at the Old Course?

We now have a scenario where Jordan Spieth can take over the world’s number one ranking from Rory McIlroy with a win this week.  Wasn’t it just a couple of weeks ago that we were talking about how big of a lead and grasp Rory had on the top spot?

Spieth continually rises to the occasion in big moments.  Has there been anything bigger than winning the third leg of the grand slam and simultaneously taking over as the world’s #1 in his young career?  Not even close.  How could you bet against him?

Fowler Wins Scottish Open

    Marc Warren watched his -10 finishing score hold up for roughly four hours before Matt Kuchar walked into the scorer’s tent with -11.

  • Rickie Fowler was two strokes behind the lead after his bogey on the 14th hole.  He went on to birdie three of his final four holes including a kick-in birdie on 18 after sticking a wedge to two feet to all but seal the victory.
  • Raphaël Jacquelin needed to hole out his 2nd shot on the par 4 18th to force a playoff.  He put the shot right on target, and the ball spun back inches away from the cup but didn’t drop.

Rickie will be looking to double down this week just like Lefty did in 2013:

“Phil [Mickelson] mentioned to me win this and there’s a good chance you win next week so I had to take care of business.”

In Gee Chun Wins US Women’s Open

  • In her first appearance, Chun’s final round 66 was enough to erase a four-shot deficit and earn her the victory.  Get the full details here.

Speaking of the Women’s US Open,

Laura Davies Misses World Golf Hall of Fame Ceremony

  • Davies made the cut in the Open which meant she had to finish the tournament Sunday and immediately catch a flight to Scotland for the ceremony Monday night (while accounting for losing 6 hours due to the time zones).
  • Davies’ plane had mechanical issues in Philadelphia due to the heat causing a delay of four hours.
  • London’s Heathrow Airport was so busy her plane was forced to circle for 30 minutes until it could land.
  • Finally when she reached Edinburgh, her luggage didn’t arrive forcing her to choose something “presentable” out of a bag she had with her.

Davies arrived at 7 p.m. local time in time to join the reception with the other members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
