3 Jack Recap: Justin Thomas, Sei Young Kim, and A Couple Happy Gilmores

The 3 Jack Recap is a review of the week that was in the world of golf.

Justin Thomas Breaks Through With CIMB Classic Win.

Sundays are far from Thomas’ best day.  Over the 2015 season, his scoring average ranks per round in order were: 6th, 11th, 6th, and then jumped to 79th in round 4.  Put simply, he’s had some final round letdowns.

After threatening to shoot 59 in round 2 (he played the final three holes even to finish with 61)to take the lead, a double bogey on 14 after hitting into the water on Sunday had everyone wondering if his pattern would repeat.

Thomas bounced right back with three straight birdies on 15-17.  A five-footer for par on 18 gave Thomas his first career win on Tour.

“Seeing them win was a little bit motivating.”

Other CIMB Stories

  • Kevin Na couldn’t find anything on his back nine Sunday, settling for a 3rd place finish.  In the first three tournaments of the new season his finishes are 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd.
  • Adam Scott sighting!  The Aussie looked his best in a long time finishing 2nd at (-25) after a final round 63.  His ball striking is sharp as always, but his putting was surprisingly good with a conventional length flat stick.

Sei Young Kim Wins Blue Bay LPGA.

Kim only does dramatic wins, apparently.  In a four-way tie for first on the 18th hole, including both of her playing partners, Kim was the only player in the group to convert her birdie opportunity.  After Candie Kung and Stacy Lewis missed their putts, Kim’s 7-footer dropped for her third victory in her rookie season.

Unsure About Labeling This A Youth Movement?

Since the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs on August 30, there has been exactly one winner on either the PGA or LPGA Tour older than 27 years (Kris Tamulis, 34).

You Didn’t Have To Do That, Rich Beem.  Literally.

That last-minute frenzy to get Ian Poulter into the Hong Kong Open?  Completely unnecessary.

After several withdrawals, Poults is in the HSBC Champions this weekend as the sixth alternate.  So the Ryder Cup Task Force and Davis Love III won’t have to share blame with anyone else if Poulter makes the European Ryder Cup team and we lose at Hazeltine next year.

Happy Gilmore Never Gets Old, Right?

“Hey guys, watch this.  This is going to be so funny.”

Except When A Pro Pulls A Happy Gilmore In A Tournament.

John Peterson showed up Sunday in dead last place of the CIMB Classic.  Not your typical ‘last place on a Sunday’ either.  His 54-hole total of 16 over par was 36 shots out of the lead (the CIMB Classic has no cut).  What do you do in this situation?  You have some fun:
