Dom DeBonis is an 81 year-old man originally from Pennsylvania, now living in Florida, and he has had an incredible streak of luck recently.
The 14 handicapper recorded four hole-in-ones over a span of 33 days, including three aces in three consecutive days, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Before last month DeBonis had one career ace, back in 1969. Starting this last September 3rd, his career stats changed dramatically. He dunked a pitching wedge from 101 yards on the par 3 fifth hole of one of his local courses in The Villages, Florida.
DeBonis waited 45 years between aces, but wouldn’t have to wait very long for his next one.
Just a few weeks later, Dom accompanies some golf buddies to Myrtle Beach. October 6 he plays Farmstead Golf Club in Calabash, NC and drains a 9 iron from 112 yards on the 17th hole.
The next day they play Thistle Golf Club in Sunset Beach, NC. Dom aces the 6th hole from 129 yards with a 7 iron.
The topper comes October 8 in Murrells Inlet, SC at Blackmoor Golf Club when he cards a one on the 4th hole with an 8 iron from 118 yards.
“I just couldn’t believe it. The guys were going bananas. They said we got to buy lottery tickets, so we went and bought a bunch of lottery tickets.”
The odds of an average golfer making a hole-in-one run 12,000-to-1. Factor in 3 in 3 days and 4 within 33 days and the odds are off the charts.
Apart from the odds, someone had to ask the obvious question. As you probably already know, custom is for the person having an ace to buy drinks for the house after the round. What I really want to know is: how much did the drinks cost for this unbelievable feat? Luckily Jason Sobel from the Golf Channel followed up on the story:
“Oh, I would imagine drinks came close to $500,” estimates DeBonis, still laughing at his fortune. “They took it easy on me after the first few.”
DeBonis played TPC at Myrtle Beach the day after his third consecutive ace, but his run of fantastic luck ended there. No word on the lottery tickets yet though.
