Fantasy Golf Picks: The McGladrey Classic

The PGA Tour moves to the opposite coast to Sea Island, Georgia for The McGladrey Classic.

The defending champion, Chris Kirk, makes his season debut after a terrific run through the FedEx Cup Playoffs last season (or “a month ago”).  Kirk lives in Sea Island along with several of the players in the field this week.

Hometown players understandably have a good track record in this tournament and that will be the key factor in my picks this week.

This Week’s Fantasy Golf Picks

Matt Kuchar is a Sea Island resident and finished T7 here last year.  He also had a top 25 finish two weeks ago at the Frys.com.  I’ll easily use him the maximum allowable times (10 starts per season) and his hometown course seems like a logical place to take him.

I’m taking another hometown player and defending champ, Chris Kirk.  He ended the season on fire, lives here, and won it last year.  Enough said.

Webb Simpson seems to really like this course.  His scoring average is just a touch over 67 here.  His last three finishes on this course: 12th, 7th, and 2nd.  Webb is also fresh off a 4th place finish last week so he has some confidence flowing.

I’m skipping a couple locals (Harris English and Zach Johnson) for Scott Brown.  He finished 20th in 2012’s McGladrey and T4 last year.  He has a hot hand this season so far also, finishing 12th and 10th in the season’s first 2 tournaments.

Shriners Hospital for Children Open Wrap Up

The PGA Tour Fantasy league we play in drops the lowest score for the year when calculating the standings and we now know which of my scores will be dropped.  A rough week to say the least.

Side note: Could Ben Martin have shown less excitement at his first win on Tour and a payday of over a million dollars?  I’m not saying everyone needs to go into full blown Billy Horschel-mode, but Ben was extremely subdued.

Anyway, The tone was set when Retief Goosen finished second to last after his 76 on day one.  His bounce back 71 on Friday wasn’t enough to make the cut.

Also missing the cut was Jon Curran.  He really did have a good week at the Frys.com though…

Ryo Ishikawa birdied his last 4 holes in a row on Sunday and 5 of his last 6 holes to finish 10-under for the tournament, earning me some points with a 28th place finish.

My best finisher was Martin Laird.  He opened with a 64, but coasted the rest of the way to finish T18 at 11-under par.

90 points for the week didn’t let me gain any ground on the leaders.  I currently sit in 5th place in the league.  At least I’m still ahead of Johnny G!

Good luck this week.
