3 Jack Recap: Bubba’s Playoff & Maggert’s Major

It was nice to have professionals handling the golf broadcast this week, wasn’t it?

Bubba Watson Beats Paul Casey on the 2nd Playoff Hole to Win Travelers Championship.

  • Casey made up a three-stroke deficit over the last five holes en route to a final round 65 to make the playoff.
  • Bogey on the 17th hole moved Bubba back into a share of the lead with one to play.  A solid up and down from off the left side of the green sent the tournament into extra holes.
  • This is the 6th time in 12 years the Travelers has been decided by a playoff.
  • It’s Watson’s 8th career victory.

Brian Harman held the 54-hole lead, but after going 39 holes without a bogey, consecutive bogeys as he made the turn moved him two strokes behind the lead.  The bright side for Harman, along with Graham DeLaet, Carl Pettersson, and Luke Donald, is he earns a spot in the British Open at St. Andrews due to his finish.

  • A final round 65 gave Maggert a two-stroke victory over Colin Montgomerie for his second senior major.
  • 65 year-old Tom Watson held at least a share of the lead for the first two rounds before a one-over 71 on Saturday left him a stroke behind the leaders.  He finished T7.

Na Yeon Choi Wins the LPGA Event with a Long, Awkward Name.

Seriously, what is with these names?  The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G.  So, Walmart is sponsoring the event but couldn’t take it home and present it also?  Anyway…

  • Choi trailed Stacy Lewis by a shot on 16 when she holed her second shot for eagle from 142 yards with an 8 iron.
  • Another 8 iron on the par 3 17th came within inches of being an ace.
  • Needing eagle on the last, Lewis laid up on the par 5 finishing hole and ended up bogeying to finish three strokes behind.

Mika Miyazato finished solo second place, two strokes back.  Lydia Ko shot a final round 63 to finish tied for sixth place.

59 Year Old Shoots 57 with Three Aces.

Retired marine, Patrick Wills, shot 57 in the second round of a 54 hole summer solstice tournament in Lorton, Virginia.  Two of the aces were on par 4’s.

  • The first ace came on the 7th hole, a 278 yard par 4.  Wills hit 3 wood.
  • The 311 yard par 4 10th hole was aced with his driver.
  • Finally, he resorted to a more traditional ace when he recorded a one on the 176 yard 14th hole with his 5 iron.

Wills is a plus-4 handicap and says he has recorded “numerous” 59’s in his playing career.  Adding to the incredible round are the missteps that kept it from being even lower: he carded a bogey on the front nine and reached the par 5 18th hole in two, but three-putted for par.  Here’s the full story.  Let me know if you’re buying the story of possibly the greatest round ever played by an amateur.
