3 Jack Recap: Lee’s Win, Streb’s Wedge & Rory’s Crutches

McIlroy Suffers Ankle Injury

Some could argue America had two soccer victories over the last couple of days, depending on who you’re cheering for.  The US Women’s National Team won the World Cup 5-2 over Japan and Rory Mcilroy suffered a “total rupture” of an ankle ligament playing soccer with his friends.  Jordan Spieth fans are liking their chances even more now.

(For the record, we love both Rory & Jordan here at 3JA.)

  • Currently there is no time frame for McIlroy’s return.  His status for the British Open is unknown.  He has been scratched from this week’s Scottish Open.
  • Every morning show had a medical specialist weigh in today and the estimates of recovery time varied from 1-6 weeks based on severity.

Even if he is able to go at St. Andrews, how can we expect him to be effective?  It’s his left ankle and with the way he braces his downswing on his left side, I can’t imagine he will contend.

The Greenbrier Classic

  • Danny Lee emerged from a four man playoff to record his first career victory.  Lee and David Hearn birdied the first playoff hole to eliminate Kevin Kisner and Robert Streb.  Lee prevailed on the second playoff hole.
  • Streb broke his putter when he innocently tossed it against his bag on the 9th hole of the final round.  He played the back nine putting with his sand wedge and unbelievably carded five birdies with it to make the playoff.
  • Just a week earlier Lee was so frustrated with his tee balls that he gave away his driver to a fan.

Tiger Makes Progress

  • Woods finished in a tie for 32nd place at 7 under par, six strokes behind the winning score.
  • Proof his game is coming around: He recorded his best ever Proximity to the Hole Average (23’11”), leading the tournament.
  • Proof he still has ways to go: His previous three best proximity averages came in tournaments he won (’05 & ’13 Bridgestone Invitational and ’06 Cadillac Championship).

Woods had good stretches with the driver, but still lost one occasionally.  Also, hitting it as close as he did all week, his iron play is shaping up but he obviously didn’t make any putts.  Ryan Lavner makes a good point, Tiger’s game had been such a mess that it’s easy to believe he probably hasn’t been practicing with the putter.

Wiesberger Wins Alstom French Open

  • Bernd Wiesberger cruised to a three stroke victory over England’s James Morrison
  • Morrison, 54-hole leader Jaco Van Zyl, and Rafa Cabrera-Bello earned spots in the British Open with their finishes.

Next up: Jordan Spieth shows his loyalty by teeing up at the John Deere Classic where Brian Harman defends his title.  Michelle Wie defends her US Women’s Open championship at the Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, PA.  The Champions Tour plays the Encompass Championship (Tom Lehman defending champ).  Phil Mickelson returns for the Scottish Open along with an excellent field the week before the British.

Have a good week.
